Our Story

Back in 2010, a small group of high-performing sales consultants became good friends at a well-known company, Carphone Warehouse. Their friendship blossomed over a few years until one turning point; Upload 2013.

Naturally, our banter led to creating a mock festival; the opposite to Download. Ideas were …

  • Instead of rock music, we would have classical music
  • Instead of a dog mascot, a cat mascot
  • Instead of a weekend, one night only

Although James likes to believe that he was the original organiser of the very first Upload 2013, it was in actual fact, Tammy. As you can see below, we have a screenshot of the email circulated around the original Uploaders.

Sorry, not sorry.

Upload 2013 - Our First Upload

We were a little ambitious on the event set up. We couldn’t book a band with our £10 budget. We even tried to persuade Nick Wincup to perform with his band but there weren’t any electric points. Collecting money from the attendees, never happened. Bulk buying food and sharing costs ended up a cost for Tammy. The wild night out ended up being a single drink in a bar along Whiteladies Road. The coming together as good friends, ended up with a couple arguing and Tammy’s miserable boyfriend wanting to go home.

We would like to pay special thanks to all attendees: Tammy Whalen Blake, Tom Parker, Kate Rennolds, Daniel Martin, James Taylor, Nick Wincup, Adam Tiley, and Sophie.

Upload 2014 - James Parents House

This year had to be better and to be honest, it wasn’t a hard job. James was assigned the role to be host, and a great host he was. Kindly allowing his not-so-trustworthy friends into his parents home while they enjoyed a break in the sun, we all celebrated our annual festival with booze, snacks and games. James went wild with his personal funds and purchased wristbands for everyone to wear.

This was one example of his creativity that made it feel more like a festival. But James didn’t stop there… he bought face paint that GLOWS IN THE DARK. Excited by the face paint, Tammy spent extra care to enhance the already beautiful features of Rich’s face. As you can see here, the end results were magnificent.

We knew the moment to leave was when all the uploaders got stuck into decorating James’ home with toilet roll and black bags.

Off we went to a nearby nightclub designed for students. While none of us were students, it was the ideal location for our childish behaviour.

The night got sweaty, especially for Adnan as he danced hard with all the female beauties. Lad-Nan was on form!

No surprise, the night ended with another couple argument (same couple as last year) but it really wouldn’t be our group if this didn’t happen.

We love drama.

Special thanks to all attendees: James Taylor, Adam Tiley, Kate Rennolds, Daniel Martin, Tammy Whalen Blake, Adnan Ahmed and Richard Davies.

Upload 2015 - Cancelled

Our beauty Kate was this year’s Upload host and in typical Kate style, it didn’t happen. This was the year we realised that we are not all designed equal. Organising is not her forte and we accept her unique self.

We also accept she is never to be responsible for one again.

Upload 2016 - Oktoberfest

Two years had passed with no Upload, and so this year’s host had to do double the work! Luckily, Tammy was on the case!

A combination of a natural leader, event organiser and creative master led to themed uploads.

It was the first year the event was kept a secret minus knowing the date and time. Upon arrival, the guest was presented with a well-decorated flat, goodie bags and a basic supply of food and drinks.

Let’s start with the goodies bags: inside each attendee had an outfit and a new German name.

The day continued with fun games such as no hand eating the pretzel competition. There are a few competitive souls in the Upload crew, but there is one that is uber-competitive and aggressive. She goes by the name of Kate!

The £30 budget stretched pretty far, not only did the event start with awesome activities at home, but it also covered entry into Bierkeller, a stein and a hotdog.

For those who are unaware of the Bierkeller, this is a budget venue with lots of fun. Tonight's show: Oktoberfest.

The band was on form, within 30 minutes we were dancing on the table, hitting our steins together shouting “oompah” and on the dancefloor interacting with randomers.

Come 11 pm, we ventured to a classic venue that welcomes fancy dress and stupidity: Popworld.

The night ended with laughter and group love, and without any arguments - the culprit for causing the fights was no longer able to access Upload tickets moving forward.

Special thanks to our attendees: Tammy Whalen Blake, James Taylor, Kate Rennolds, Adam Tiley, Jonny Bongo, Shaun Whalen Smith, Adnan Ahmed, Richard Davies and Sabrina Whalen Blake.

Upload 2017 - Meximas

Taking it from single great minds to two powerful minds and what better way to start the duo with Adam and James.

Competitive streaks grew to new levels as Upload 2016 set a new precedent.

Keeping to the theme style Upload, this year welcomes a very unusual theme: Meximas.

For those who have never heard of this global event, it is Mexico’s Christmas. Well, this is what we told one gullible Carphone Warehouse employee who almost arrived at work dressed up for the occasion until it was revealed Meximas was actually a joke.

The joke came to life for one-time only.

This year we were responsible for our own outfits as the theme was announced a month before the event. Everyone got stuck in. Here are some examples of our enthusiastic Uploaders.

Leading up to Meximas, Adam and James enjoyed many ideations in their living room. While they had grand plans, some were just not possible to create. But they were able to create an epic game that stood out from all activities to date - “Knock down the Mexican wall”

It was the year Donald Trump announced he was building a wall between the USA and Mexico. The game would consist of one player being Trump; wearing a Trump mask with oven gloves and foam bricks. While the other player would be a Mexican; wearing a sombrero with a slingshot and balls to knock down the wall. The goal was for the Mexican to keep the wall below 3 bricks high otherwise a shot was to be drunk by the player.

The game was going well until Tammy (the Mexican) tried to bribe Jonny (Trump) to not build the wall but rather throw bricks at all the other Uploaders.

Time to head out!

Off we went back to our favourite nightclub, Popworld. At this point we are unable to recall our actions as James and Adam ensured we were well supplied with booze!

Special thanks to all attendees: James Taylor, Adam Tiley, Kate Rennolds, Sabrina Whalen Blake, Tammy Whalen Blake, Shaun Whalen, Smith, Adnan Ahmed, Richard Davies, and Jonny Bongo

Upload 2018 - Country & Western

Time to “take it up a notch” quoted Jonny and Sabrina, the host of Upload 2018. It was the first time Upload was hosted outside of Bristol. Home to both hosts, Upload took to the road and partied in Hereford. More specifically, Sabrina’s house.

What an amazing display. They truly went hard on the decor and it was evident some love, sweat and creativity had been put into this year’s event. They even made sure we had good weather for the day.

The cost increased but this was welcomed with the array of services. From a well-stocked fridge of drinks to sitting on hay. Detail all the way through.

Upon arriving we were welcomed by Sheriffs who guided us through the country and western style garden and to our outfits. We were not allowed to go outside until we were dressed and together as a group. The Sheriffs remained in character all the way through the experience. We were ordered to move quickly and line up before proceeding into the new world…

What a display! We had a saloon, game zones and even a prison for bad behaviour. Genius!

The food was top notch. With Sabrina as a great cook and Jonny as a creative master, they created chilli beans, potent punishment drinks and taco shells.

The day was full of fun activities. There was no time spent bored.

This was the first year we had a new nightclub to entertain with our crazy Upload concept, The Venue. The nightclub goers treated us well, we felt comfortable to bring our weird and wonderful selves all night long. Drinks continued to flow for many but not for Kate. Kate couldn’t walk properly so we had to send her home to Norma’s house.

Furthermore the night got a little stranger as Adam ran out of the club screaming (with his high pitched voice and fuelled with too much Redbull.)

We lost Adam for 3 hours! Did we search for him…. NO!

To top it off, Kim was spewing on the floor, Jonny took a nap next to Kim, James watching Kim, and Joe holding on to Tammy to stop him falling.

Time to head home!

We woke up to a very sad Kate. She had fallen out of the taxi, smashed her face on the floor and woke up with a sore hungover head.

Special thanks to attendees James Taylor, Adam Tiley, Kate Rennolds, Sabrina Whalen Blake, Tammy Whalen Blake, Shaun Whalen, Smith, Kim Whalen Blake, and Jonny Bongo

Upload 2019 - Wrestling

What happens when you put creative and managerial with slow and mumble?

This year we took Upload on Tour. While Kim is creative, Adnan not so much but we totally appreciated their unique selves when we received our first glimpse of the Upload 2019 theme, an invitation with 'Upload on Tour' hand drawn by artists Adnan. We were beyond excited to learn Upload was going on the road! Little did we know where though.

Excitedly we all arrived at our destination! Not sure why our expectations led us to believe we would have a lovely apartment but it did. And so you can imagine our disappointment when we were presented with a scruffy apartment.

Immediately Sabrina checked for bedbugs, Jonny found piss stains on the bedding and a mouse ran out the door.

The last bit might be a joke. We are not sure but it is likely.

We think the hosts had great intentions but lacked execution. Maybe they had little time. A whole year isn’t much when you have Adnan as a host.

Laughing hard at the start of Upload, we were in high spirits as we still had our outfits to be given and theme announced.

The moment came. A budget bag was handed to each of us. There are no words really to describe the overall emotion we felt. Try mixing horrified, excited, uncomfortable and intrigued together and that's the emotion.

On we went to a high-end wrestling match.

Drinking hard to mask our unknown feeling, we jumped in the car for a short…. 1-hour drive!!! To a location that Adnan thought was “nearby” and decent.

We arrived in the middle of a council estate to a luxury dodgy tin shed-building where we would be watching the local wrestling match.

Not one of us wanted to walk in first, but we supported our red faces by laughing harder, unsure of our reality and walking proudly together.

If you are not aware of these kinds of events, no-one ever turns up in fancy dress! No one!

The kids, of which there were many, and the parents believed we were part of the show. Oh no. We naturally got into character and played our wrestling role throughout.

They were gutted to learn that we were not fighting when we sharply left the venue to get to our final destination, Cardiff's biggest nightclub, Tiger Tiger.

Our hosts have been consistent with the day’s event until now. We had a private booth with a large bucket filled with booze. We had gone from budget and disorganised to quality.

The night ended in high spirits and more laughter. The unusual Upload award goes to Kim and Adnan!
